NFPA conference takes on growing interest in the green building industry

It’s estimated that the green building industry will reach $60 billion this year, and will create 2.5 million jobs. These are impressive numbers, but you’re asking, “What does all this have to do with the NFPA Conference & Expo, and why should I care?” Well, in an effort to support our member’s growing interest in the green building industry, and because of the increasing demand for LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified professionals, NFPA has become a U.S. Green Building Council Education Provider.

That means that you can earn Green Building Certification Institute approved continuing education hours at this year’s conference. You can choose from 13 approved sessions in our “Green” education track, and apply the credit towards earning or maintaining their LEED Accredited Professional or LEED Green Associate designations.

NFPA’s Anna Thompson shares her favorite Las Vegas restaurants

Anna Thompson is NFPA’s manager of Meetings & Conferences. Anna has worked for NFPA for more than 40 years and has traveled extensively throughout the United States as part of her job. A self-described "foodie", Anna appreciates fine food and wine, either from her own kitchen or from restaurants she visits during her travels. As we look ahead to our Conference & Expo this June, we asked Anna to share her favorite places to eat in Las Vegas.

1. Lawry's The Prime Rib
   Lawry’s gets it right.  Since 1938 for roasted prime ribs of beef and more…with tableside silver carts to serve you. The restaurant will bring you back to another era with its design and extraordinary feeling of warmth and elegance. The food, excellent service and unmistakable style will enchant you. 
2. Emeril's New Orleans Fish House
   One of my favorite chef’s and a great place whether you dine or relax at the bar and grab a quick lunch. Try one of the New Orleans Po' Boy sandwiches. Emeril’s offers deliciously provocative seafood from the coastlines of Louisiana combined with creative imagination. You have to try the banana cream pie for dessert. 
3. Bouchon at The Venetian
   This Bistro is masterfully created with a beautiful interior. The exquisite décor is the perfect setting for Bouchon’s culinary delights. The menu offers classic bistro dishes including steak frites, roasted chicken, quiche, brandade, boudin noir, pot de crème and profiteroles. I couldn’t resist the steak frites.
4. Spago
   I never go to Vegas without a stop at Spago’s after shopping a bit. Located in the Forum Shops at Caesars, the casual “indoor” patio café is open for lunch and dinner and is great for people watching inside the Forum Shops. Go for one of Wolfgang Puck’s signature pizzas. 
5. Postrio
   Location, location, location…at The Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes in St. Mark’s Square, Postrio Bar & Grill presents a contemporary version of the classic "bar and grill" in a spectacular setting. The restaurant offers casual as well as sophisticated fine dining that can be enjoyed either as a relaxed, leisurely dining experience or as a comfortable, quick-bite. The walk to get there will bring you into the world of Venice.

And although we asked Anna for her top FIVE restaurants, she couldn't resist throwing in a couple of "extras":

• Red Square
  Red Square at Mandalay Bay transports you to a world of romance and intrigue. Mingle in the Vodka Vault and hobnob at the famous frozen bar. The bar is really frozen…now that’s something to experience and it’s in Mandalay Bay.
• Burger Bar
  The ultimate burger experience, from the famous restaurateur Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys. This is a build your own burger joint at Mandalay Bay. Deciding on what type of burger, the toppings and which fries to get can be a daunting.

NFPA Americas’ Fire and Security Expo to join the 2010 NFPA Conference & Expo

NFPA and ROC Exhibitions, Inc. have announced that Americas’ Fire and Security Expo (AFSE), previously held in Miami, will join the 2010 NFPA Conference & Expo, the largest and most prestigious fire and life safety industry event in the United States which will be held in Las Vegas June 7-10.

“AFSE has been a successful event for 15 years, serving primarily the Latin American distributors and integrators of fire and security products. Joining with NFPA’s premier Conference & Expo, which alternates between Chicago, Boston and Las Vegas, will better serve distribution channels and end users from Latin America by providing a larger audience and additional opportunities,” said Marc Rosenstock, President of ROC Exhibitions, Inc. “We are also exploring options for a possible return to Miami in 2011 with a new regional show that would meet the needs of that market.”

Sessions of special interest to the Latin American audience will be offered in Spanish or simultaneously translated, a Latin American networking function will be introduced, and an International Business Center will be established for the convenience of end-users and channel partners visiting from Latin America and other countries.
