NFPA's Dick Roux summarizes the different types of mass notification covered in NFPA 72 in this video clip. NFPA Conference & Expo 2011 in Boston will have several sessions and a Pre-Conference Seminar addressing issues related to NFPA 72.

The 3 day Pre-Conference seminar, “NFPA 72®: National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code” will be held from June 10-12 and will bring your knowledge up-to-code with in-depth instruction on the planning, design, approval, installation, testing, and use of fire detection and alarm systems, plus key elements of single and multiple-station alarms and household fire alarm systems.

Several educational sessions are also scheduled during the Conference. These include: S07 - Developing Emergency Communication Strategies for Buildings, S40 - Strategies and Tools for Planning, Design, and Use of Emergency Communications Systems, M01 - Voice Intelligibility Requirements of the 2010 Edition of NFPA 72®, M15 - Understanding Risk Analysis Concepts and Their Requirements in NFPA 72®–2010 Edition, M30 - The 2010 and 2013 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code — A Panel Discussion of Strategic Changes and Possible New Material, and M61 - NFPA 72 2010, Chapter 24 — Emergency Radio Communications Systems: Developing the Requirement Specific to the Needs of Your AHJ.

Remembering the Triangle Fire

 

Today (March 25) marks the 100^th anniversary of a fire that occurred at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City, which resulted in 146 workers losing their lives. A spotlight session (T34) at this year’s conference will feature the Fire Protection Research Foundation’s Casey Grant discussing how significant advances in fire protection can be traced back to this single tragic event. The incident prompted NFPA to create the Committee on Life Safety several years later, which established a fire safety code to address building exits. It was the precursor to today’s widely-used Life Safety Code®.

NFPA Journal® recently commemorated the anniversary of the Triangle fire with a feature story in its March/April 2011 issue. The story chronicled the 1911 fire and explored factory fire safety in the hundred years since in the cover story, The Triangle Fire, 100 Years Later. To date, the Triangle fire remains the largest accidental industrial building fire in U.S. history.
