"Green" effort means no paper hand-outs at Chicago conference

The NFPA Conference & Expo is going “green” in Chicago. We’re trying to reduce the amount of paper that we use, so when you register at the event, you’ll receive a memory stick that contains copies of all of the session hand-outs that we received by May 1. In addition, we won’t be distributing any hand-outs at our education sessions, but meeting attendees can sign-in to our Web site now and download our session hand-outs. These documents will be available for download through the end of June.

Dear boss: here's why I need to attend NFPA's conference in Chicago...

August 1 deadline for 2008 pricing

Did you know you can already register and make hotel reservations for the 2009 NFPA Conference & Expo (formerly known as the World Safety Conference & Exposition), June 8 – 11?  The best part is that until this Friday, August 1, a special promotion is in effect.  You can register for 2009 at 2008 rates!  2009 rates will kick in on August 2.  Government employees and others whose fiscal year begins on October 1 can take advantage of this year’s training budget dollars by registering now.

   This year’s conference has more than 150 sessions to choose from. There are also 24 pre-conference seminars held on the weekend before the conference (less time away from work). Go through the schedule with your boss, pointing out the sessions that are relevant to your work. Mention the conference provides the chance to talk to industry experts including technical committee members and NFPA staff, so the learning isn’t limited to the classrooms.
2. Spread the wealth!
   Tell your boss that you will take notes and brief the whole team when you get back. You can put a full formal presentation together so everyone will benefit. If you aren’t able to do a full presentation, write up an email to circulate that shares details of the main points of the sessions you attended.
3. Don’t mention the gambling!
   When convincing your boss you should attend, don’t focus on Las Vegas as an entertainment destination. Instead, talk about how the NFPA room block has rooms starting at only $85 a night, that flights to Las Vegas are inexpensive, and there are all-you-can-eat buffets for $9.99.
