I wanted to take a minute to let everyone know that recently there was a meeting between the NFPA 1061 TC and APCO. This meeting was held in Orlando in conjunction with APCO's winter summit. The reason for this meeting was to discuss the NFPA 1061 document and APCO's P33 document and the future of these documents. This meeting was really designed to open up the dialog between both organizations as well as the members of the committees to ensure that each document provides those that use them with the best applicable requirements. Both groups worked very hard at the meeting to ensure that each document provides distinct requirements that are not overlapping and each complement each other. That NFPA 1061 and P33 are both separate documents but they best use out of both would be to use them together, 1061 being the individual competency/evaluation document, while P33 is the training standard by which the AHJ, hiring authority, or comm center manager would use to train those that work at a specific facility. So what we have is 1061 as the minimum requirements and P33 builds upon those requirements.
I would also like to advise everyone that both the NFPA 1061 TC and NFPA 1221 are both seeking members for their committees and those interested should submit applications. Also while NFPA 1061 is not in cycle as of yet I would also strongly urge the submission of public proposals for the next edition as they work closely with APCO to make sure that NFPA 1061 and P33 are symbiotic documents.
