Are you involved with pre-incident planning?
NFPA's Technical Committee on Pre-Incident Planning has proposed to move NFPA 1620 from a recommended practice to a standard. At a series of meetings over the past two years, the committee identified and specified the minimum requirements necessary for the development of pre-incident plans. Although the document is not intended for pre-incident planning related to construction, alteration and demolition (this is covered in NFPA 241), its purpose is to develop plans to assist responding personnel in effectively managing emergencies for the protection of occupants, responding personnel, property and the environment.
The proposed standard also leaves it to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) to determine the location to be pre-incident planned, the data to be collected and the extent of documentation appropriate for the jurisdiction. The AHJ is also permitted to establish a phase-in schedule for compliance with the requirements of the standard.
Three updated Annexes also provide pre-incident planning case histories, information addressing
the special or unique characteristics of specific occupancy classifications, and sample forms.
NFPA 1620 is currently open for public comment. The comment closing date is March 3, 2009.
