The US Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management Accountability Report for 2008 stated that the Firewise program continued to be the “national message of choice” in defining and encouraging individual responsibility for interface safety.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) received support from the US Forest Service again in 2008 in which more than 400 FIREWISE communities were established in 37 states. With Firewise liaisons in 38 states, the program’s principles and recommendations has provided encouragement and guidance for nearly 500,000 people living in recognized Firewise communities nationwide. During the peak of fire season, over 800,000 individual hits occurred on the website monthly.
Now managed by the NFPA, the Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone workshops continue to focus on high risk hazards and situations in interface areas. The workshops offered in cooperation with sponsoring organizations like state forestry offices and the IAFC provide a systematic approach in property assessment and mitigation. For information on how your organization can sponsor a workshop, contact Cheryl Blake at cblake@nfpa.org.
