Thefederal panel that makes recommendations regarding who should receive vaccinations, specifically swine flu at this time, has released the list of people who should be in the front of the line when it comes to getting these vaccinations. The list includes pregnant women, health care workers, and children six months and older. Along with that group the panel suggested that parents and caregivers of infants, non-elderly adults who have high-risk medical conditions and young adults ages 19-24 should also be in that list. This is just a recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices that will be put to vote sometime this week. It should be noted that the recommendations are usually adopted by federal health personnel.
The biggest issue here is the fact that the government figures that about 120 million swine flu vaccine doses will be available with a potential of 160 million people needing the vaccinations. And that is just in the groups that have been prioritized. The government is betting on the fact that most people will not run out and get vaccinated as statistically only less than half of those who are recommended to get vaccinated actually get the yearly vaccine.
