The Fourth of July holiday weekend is rapidly approaching. People all across the country will be headed out to barbecues, family gatherings, parades, and professional fireworks displays. This is summertime at its finest. Many of us have our hearts set on the seemingly endless buffets of hot dogs, hamburgers, sweets and treats, and let’s not forget about the adult beverages to be had. The increase in traffic on the nation’s roadways and the vast amount of celebrations most certainly warrant a safety reminder to designate a sober driver during this weekend’s festivities.
AAA is predicting approximately 34.9 million travelers will be hitting the roadways to travel at least 50 miles or more between July 1st and July 5th. This is an increase of 5.9 million motorists, or 17.1%, compared to 2009. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) most recent figures show that approximately 11,773 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2008. This makes up approximately 32% of the 37,261 traffic crash fatalities for 2008. On average, this equates to someone being killed in an alcohol-impaired driving crash every 45 minutes in the US.
As you head out to join the masses and celebrate Independence Day this weekend please make the effort to enjoy it responsibly. Designate a sober driver to look out for your safety and the safety of the other 34.9 million motorists. Have a safe weekend!
