The NFPA Technical Committee on Forest and Rural Fire Protection will be meeting next week in San Dimas, CA to discuss issues surrounding NFPA 1141, Standard for Fire Protection Infrastructure for Land Development in Suburban and Rural Areas and NFPA 1142, Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting. Although the 2010 wildfire season has been slightly slower compared to that of the last decade, our nation has seen an abundance of acreage and property destroyed. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho has indicated that we have burned over 2.6 million acres so far this year. This amounts to only half of the ten year national average, even though we have seen major disasters such as nearly 170 homes burned in Colorado during the month of September and more than twice the annual amount of acreage burned in Alaska. The wildfire season has been anything but quiet to residents in areas such as these.
Many communities around the country are adversely affected by the spread of wildfire in the wildland urban interface. The Technical Committee on Forest and Rural Fire Protection continues to work on NFPA documents that directly deal with fire hazards in and around these communities. Good meeting this week. I believe the process is working well to improve both of these important documents!
