Several technical committees in the Fire and Emergency Services Protective Clothing and Equipment project have just completed their Report on Proposals (ROP) meetings. These technical committees reviewed public proposals and generated several committee proposals that are of interest to fire and emergency services personnel.
The Technical Committee on Special Operations Protective Clothing and Equipment is proposing a new document, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Technical Rescue Incidents. The public will be invited to submit comments to this document when the ROP is published on December 23. In the meantime, the proposed standard can be viewed on the NFPA 1855 Document Information page.
The Technical Committee on Respiratory Protection is revising NFPA 1852, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); NFPA 1981, Standard on Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services; and NFPA 1989, Standard on Breathing Air Quality for Emergency Services Respiratory Protection. The technical committee is proposing several changes to NFPA 1981, covering topics that include cylinder construction, lens conduction and radiant heat and flame resistance performance requirements, buddy breathers, and end-of-service time indicators (EOSTI). The comment period for these documents will open on December 23. For more information, see the Document Information pages for these standards.
The Technical Committee on Structural and Proximity Fire Fighting Protective Clothing and Equipment reviewed proposals to NFPA 1851, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting. The technical committee is addressing topics that include requirements for independent service providers, cleaning agent effectiveness, repair procedures, and others. Please visit the Document Information page for up-to-the-minute information on the development of this standard.
The Technical Committee on Electronic Safety Equipment met to review proposals to NFPA 1982, Standard on Personal Alert Safety Systems. This technical committee is seeking to introduce updated requirements for RF PASS and audible primary pre-alarm signals.
