Newport News firefighters rescued four people from a burning apartment building last week, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Crews responded to the blaze in the fire in the 500 block of Bellwood Road around 11:15 p.m. While firefighters saw no smoke from the outside of the building, thick smoke filed the hall and stairway once they were inside.
Residents on the second floor exited from windows after crews stretched up ladders to them. Four adults were brought down the ladders by firefighters, evaluated at the scene and declined to go to the hospital.
Crews had the fire under control by 11:40 p.m. and contained the fire to a unit on the first floor. Four units were condemned and the damage was estimated at $25,000.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
