In late July 2009, a Volunteer firefighter was injured during a water-shuttling training exercise, when the Large Diameter Hose (LDH) Appliance sustained a catastrophic failure. The appliance broke into two separate pieces causing injuries to one firefighter.
The Testing and Maintenance requirements set forth in NFPA 1965, Standard for Fire Hose Appliances, is geared toward the Manufactures of the appliances. In NFPA 1965, Chapter 6 Test Methods details the requirements for testing of Fire Hose Appliances and Section 6.9 details the remaining testing requirements for Hydrostatic Test.
In NFPA 1962, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Hose Connected Appliances, Chapter 8, details the requirements for the Use, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Hose Connected Appliances. This document is geared toward Fire Departments, Section 8.1 details the Use of Appliances and in Section 8.3; the standard discusses the Hydrostatic Testing of Appliances, which departments should conduct to ensure the reliability and integrity of their equipment.
