Many of you remember with fondness NFPA Staff Liaison Bruce Teele who retired from the Public Fire Protection Division in December 2010. Bruce spent his entire 40+ year career at NFPA working on standards that directly affected the safety and welfare of fire fighters. His contributions have been noteworthy and his legacy significant. Sadly, since his retirement Bruce has suffered from rapid progression of early onset Alzheimer's disease and he is currently living in an Alzheimer's care unit at a nursing facility in Newton, MA.
In recognition of the significant contributions provided by Bruce to the cause of health and safety for the fire service, a special tribute has been named in Bruce's honor: the "Bruce W. Teele Excellence Award". This award was presented on Wednesday 18/March/2015 at the FIERO PPE Symposium held in Raleigh, North Carolina. The award, sponsored by Globe Manufacturing Company, was presented by his long-time friend and former Fire chief Bruce Varner and Pat Freeman of Globe Manufacturing. The award recipient during this inaugural year was Rich Duffy, IAFF-retired and longtime Chair of the NFPA PPE project. This was a great tribute to our friend Bruce Teele, and the audience gave a standing ovation in recognition of this honor.
