A side-by-side demonstration at the Spartanburg County Safety Day in Una (SC) educated about 150 attendees on the benefits of home fire sprinklers Saturday. The first of six side-by-side burns to be conducted throughout the state before the end of the year, the live burn was funded by the National Fire Protection Association, and hosted by the South Carolina Fire Sprinkler Coalition. Employees of Lowe’s home improvement store built two structures to simulate the room of a typical home, with only one of the rooms containing a fire sprinkler. Each room contained common furnishings, window treatments and a working smoke alarm. “By providing this unique live fire comparison, people not only gain an appreciation for the power and speed of a fire, they also realize what an incredible advantage it is to have a fire sprinkler system installed if fire breaks out,” says Les Woods, president of South Carolina Fire and Life Safety Education Association (SC FALSE).

“There is nothing more devastating to the community than a fatal fire” say Maria Figueroa, NFPA’s Fire Prevention Field Office Regional Director, who joined representatives from the South Carolina Fire Sprinkler Coalition, SC FALSE and the Una Fire Department, to put on this educational event.

Great post....I wish they would run this sort of initiative in the UK
