Sam Davis of Island Harbor Construction in Cape Coral, Florida has begun offering a free fire sprinkler system in all new homes he builds. A story airing on Fox4 Morning News yesterday features the builder explaining the life safety value of these systems and dispelling some of the common myths; pointing out that fire sprinklers do not all go off at once or affect aesthetics of the home. His website includes a link to the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, where consumers and others who visit receive education on home fire sprinkler systems.
Cape Coral policy makers are hard at work to pass an ordinance that will offer incentives for fire sprinkler installation on all new homes. A Fire Protection Research Foundation study found that incentives typically offered by communities can offset up to one-third of the system cost. National Fire Sprinkler Association Vice President of Regional Operations Buddy Dewar stated, referring to the Cape Coral initiative: "This is a great example of the economic incentive plan working."
According to Dewar, another home builder in the area found out about his competitor’s offer and will be doing the same. Could this become a new trend? I sincerely hope so.
