In the early morning hours of February 4th a single fire sprinkler extinguished a townhouse fire, saving the lives of eleven people. According to Officer David Baldwin, Public Information Officer of the Marietta Fire and Police Department, most members of the family; comprised of of six children, ranging in ages from 4-12, and five adults, were asleep when the fire started.
Statistics reveal that the majority of fatal home fires start between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. and most fire victims are asleep. The working smoke alarms and the fire sprinkler system worked together to provide this large family early warning and additional time to escape. Fire damage at the occupancy, built in 2005, was limited to the room of origin.
