The late actor first played the character of George Jefferson on the popular ‘70s sitcom, ‘All in the Family’. Known for his humorous talent, Hemsley was discovered by producer Norman Lear in 1973 while still a stage actor in New York.
Hemsley had dreams of acting however when he was only a child. His dreams came to fruition during Fire Prevention Week when he played the role of fire for a school sketch.
"They threw water on me and I rolled on the floor and said 'Foiled again!'," he told the Associated Press in 1986.
We're glad Fire Prevention Week helped to launch this great talent's career and are saddened that he has passed away, but will keep Sherman in our memories!
