When responding to medical calls or doing smoke alarm installations, emergency medical technicians and firefighters may encounter older adults who are suffering from abuse. For World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th, Massachusetts Ethos, a private, non-profit organization that provides home- and community-based care to the elder and people with disabilities, worked with older adults to hold a flash mob at the Roche Brothers supermarket in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston to draw attention to the physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; financial exploitation; neglect; abandonment; or self-neglect that many seniors secretly face. Ethos administers the Elder Protective Services for the entire city of Boston.

It's awful to think of the elderly and vulnerable being abused. At least some can be helped by medical people and firefighters discovering this. It's a shame we can't help more people.
