While most people can reach electrical switches and
receptacles mounted on the wall near the floor or above a counter, these
locations may present “insurmountable barriers” for those with mobility
disabilities, says Jeffrey Sargent in “Accessibility for All?,” his column in the most recent issue of NFPA
Journal.
To help designers and installers make such switches and receptacles more accessible, the National Electrical Code-Making Panel 1 recently accepted a proposal that, if accepted, would add a new annex, “2010 ADA Requirements for Accessible Design,” to the 2014 edition of the National Electrical Code® that will give designers, installers, and authorities having jurisdiction relevant, fundamental accessibility requirements that affect the installation of electrical equipment that requires manual operation or programming.
